CLARKSVILLE RURITANS

WHO WE ARE



 

Ruritans is a national civic organization dedicated to improving communities and building a better America through fellowship, goodwill, and community service.  The clubs are mostly in rural areas of the Southeast and serve rural areas.  Each chapter benefits its own area. Clarksville is the epitome of this creed giving over $238 thousand dollars back to the community. 

The Ruritan Club meets the third Monday of every month for a dinner meeting, which is held at the Clarksville Community Center @ 6:30pm. Guests are always welcome.

OUR COMMUNITY

Clarksville Thrift Shop

This fascinating shopping facility is located downtown at 211 Market Street behind Wells Fargo bank building.  It relies on community donations for the items sold which range from clothing, books to decorations to furniture and appliances.

All tax-deductible contributions are accepted during open hours

Hours:

Friday: 9:00am to 5:00pm

Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm

Charge cards and debit cards are accepted.

The floor to the Thrift Shop is cleared and this non-smoking, non alcohol facility becomes a floor for dancing or just sitting for listening. The concessions area is open for snacks. 

Doors open Friday nights at 5:30pm.  Live band music begins at 7:00pm and ends at 10:00pm.

Cost: $15 per couple or $8 per single

Brunswick Stew

Stew is made and sold 4 times a year during the months of November through February.  Actual dates and prices of the quart vary.  Stew is sold in advance orders on the morning of the cooking on College Street in front of Dollar General of at the Thrift Shop.

The stew sale is the oldest fund raiser of the Ruritans.  The charter members started having stew over 50 years ago.​

Every Tuesday night the Clarksville community Center on Woodlawn Dr. (A block off Highway 58 across from Food Lion).

Doors open at 5:30pm

Costs vary depending on number of sheets played; minimum is $15.00.  31 games are played with prizes varying.  Regular and progressive games are offered. Refreshments are available at the concession stand.

BUFFALOE PARK

Buffalo Road park was built and is maintained by the Ruritans.  It is on Buffaloe Road, Clarksville and is open to the public.  It closes at 7:00pm each day.

Swings, slides and climbing walls are available for young children and a gazebo offers shade to observers. There is a walking path around the perimeter for all ages.  At the base of the American Flag is a brick memorial to honor deceased Ruritan members.

CLARKSVILLE RURITAN SCHOLARSHIPS

The Clarksville Ruritan Club, Inc. raises money to support organizations and programs in the Clarksville, Virginia area that improve the lives of its citizens, create a better understating among people, and make our community a better place to live and work.

The Club is pleased that $75,000 is available annually for scholarships; awards generally range from $1,000 to $5,000 per student.
